About Rolandas / Lithuanian painter

Following
the unknown

My paintings begin without a fixed destination. Through colour, gesture and the unexpected, I look for the meeting place between nature and the world within.

01 / The journey

From restoration
to discovery

I was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 1987. I studied drawing and painting at Cambridge Regional College, then painting restoration at Kaunas College. Those foundations were followed by six years working as an art director in advertising.

A desire to understand more about myself and the world took me to the Andes and the Amazon. Those journeys deepened my relationship with nature, which became a central source of inspiration for my painting.

Since 2019, I have worked as a full-time independent artist. My practice continues to follow that sense of discovery, allowing the painting to develop through intuition and attention.

02 / Artist statement

A painting finds
its own way

I begin with feelings expressed through abstract marks. Rather than holding on to the first image or association, I follow what is happening on the canvas. Gradually, a scene emerges that I could not have planned.

For me, painting is a way of exploring reality and the inner, dreamlike world we carry within us. Myths, metaphors and archetypes become a language for experiences that are difficult to put into words.

I want the paintings to offer a place to pause: a space in which the viewer can reflect, make their own connections and recognise something of their own inner world.
