We don’t know what awaits us on the other side. Often fear takes over when we try to feel what it means not to be. Such imagination is quite prevalent in a society- that all ends with death, that we will disappear.
However the likelihood that death is the end is equal to the likelihood that death is the beginning. The mythology begins right here. For thousands of years our ancestors have been talking about the death process in tales, myths, fine arts and songs. And these stories is nothing else but feelings, going down deeply into oneself searching for this faith- that when the light fades away, there will be someone who leads through the unknown passage. This is what this picture is about- becoming a child on the way home and about mother’s love and care.
When we encounter not knowing in life situations, we get an opportunity again to become children for a while and switch on the curiosity to explore. The same applies when stepping into the other side, into the unknown- a child awakens in a human, he hatches from the head, which has been storing all life, and becomes the purest part of himself. On his way, he encounters memories- both beautiful and not- they are like monuments standing in some part of a spirit. Those memories try to appear as real, as if you wished to wander in such cemeteries all the time. The pure soul is on the way home, but it is choosing, whether to keep wandering for a while between that which is not alive anymore, or travel straight into the eternal nonexistence, into mother’s embrace to experience one’s realness.
The plot of this painting appeared after recognising a motherly figure in the upper corner. There I recognised the old Baltic goddess Mara (who is close to Catholic Virgin Mary), who is inviting a baby home. The lagoon is swaying in her arms- those lagoon waters through which in our cradles we swim out into eternity. Mother is the bridge, which brings us into this world, and with this bridge we also leave this world.
Each of us keeps coming back into childhood constantly, unconsciously, so this painting is a hope that we will indeed experience it again.
